CHAPTER NINTEEN

* * *

Alverez was beyond irate. He was pacing back and forth in the small office in the back of El Luz Loco while Diego Gomez, his tattooed face set in a worried frown, watched. It was three steps and turn, three steps and turn, then suddenly Alverez whirled and glared at Gomez. “Where is that puto?”

“Uh, you mean Garcia?” Diego’s nose and forehead were raw and abraded from bouncing off the pavement when Harm had struck the back of his head with the shotgun stock. “He told me he would be right in.”

“Go get that cabrón now!”

Gomez dashed out and returned almost immediately with Garcia. “Sit down!” commanded the boss.

This was barely possible, as it was a small room to begin with, mostly occupied by a desk and a filing cabinet. The cramped quarters increased the tension. Garcia and Gomez crammed themselves into the two chairs across the desk from Alverez, overlapping each other like two fat men flying next to each other in coach. Alverez stared at them. “What the fuck happened?”

Garcia delivered the bad news stoically. “We were hit. Somehow, they knew where the bank was. They were on me, too. They crashed into me, in my car. They had people on Diego and stopped him so he couldn’t come to help.”

“One of you assholes made a mistake. Either on purpose or through stupidity. One of you fuckers is working against me.”

“They didn’t take any of the cash at the whorehouse,” said Gomez.

Garcia set his cold eyes on him. “You knew the bank was at my place.” He continued to stare. “You think ’cuz they didn’t hit the whorehouse and take your money that puts you above suspicion? It makes you look more guilty!” He turned in his chair, his face inches from Diego’s. “Why aren’t you dead? You have the stink of a traitor.”

Gomez scrambled to defend himself. “That chele almost killed me. He was there waiting for me.”

“What about Ramón? The thieves didn’t kill him, either. How much does he know? Did you tell him something over the pillow, Hector?” asked Alverez accusingly. “Who else did you tell about the money at your house?”

“I questioned Ramón first. He knows the same as everybody—that I’m the bagman.” The cold look on Garcia’s face got colder. “And he knows what I would do to anybody that crosses me—so does everybody else.” He locked his dead eyes on Alverez. “I’m surprised at you, Alejandro. You disappoint me.” Garcia’s expression took on a strange intensity “All these years and you still don’t know me. Remember what you’ve seen, what I did to my own father?”

“Sí, sí, I’m upset. Lo siento,” said Alverez, backing down.

Garcia said, “This is something different. They were pros. They had it all sewed up. It wasn’t internal, and it wasn’t a gang thing. Somebody got wind of our business. The deal got leaked, and these assholes must have watched us and figured it all out or else they were just lucky. If that is what happened, they will curse their luck.
